Cała saga rozpoczyna się od dnia urodzin 11- letniego Harrego Pottera. Tytułowy bohater to osierocony chłopiec, który w dniu urodzin dowiaduje się, że jako dziecko pary potężnych czarowników, sam posiada unikalną, magiczną moc. Harry rozpoczyna naukę w Szkole Magii. Znajduje tam dwójkę oddanych przyjaciół, którzy postanawiają pomóc mu w rozwiązaniu tajemnicy śmierci jego rodziców.
Z biegiem ekranizacji kolejnych książek, Harry z roku na rok dorasta w Hogwardzie. W życiu młodego czarodzieja pojawiają się też nowe postacie: Gilderoy Lockhart, domowy skrzata Zgredek, Syriusz Black i Dolores Umbridge.
